Broke? You have money in your head (yes you do)
You’re richer than you think.
You have money in your head. You have knowledge and experiences that others wish they had. Did you just scoff?
Then you might suffer from The Curse of Knowledge.
It works like this - if we know a lot about something, or something comes really easy to us, then we assume it’s the same for everyone else.
So we undervalue it, or we don’t value it at all.
This knowledge or skill could be ANYTHING.
Family dynamics.
Fishing bait and technique.
How to win at Pop-A-Shot.
The best grilled cheese sandwich.
Investment portfolios.
Here’s one of mine: I was absolutely crap at networking. Hated it. Made every mistake possible. This stalled my career as a comedy writer. Then the pandemic happened, and the industry collapsed. This forced me to find a way to get money.
So I reverse-engineered my mistakes. Combined it with my standup experience and my special interest in communication and psychology. I created a talk in networking for writers.
To me it felt too obvious. Why wouldn’t they already know this stuff? But, desperate times and all that. So I put on an online session and the writers loved it. Gobsmacked!
Now, 5 years later, I’m flying around the world teaching it. It’s expanded and grown. It’s also expanded my public speaking opportunities in general. All the names on my speaking wish list get ticked off, one by one.
Give your knowledge and experience a chance! Someone out there needs what you have.
Have a think about:
what comes naturally to you
what things people say that you’re really good at
what lights you up from within
what you know like the back of your hand
what’s missing out there
what you wish people knew about this knowledge/skill
how you do/know things differently from other people
Start small if you want. See what works, what doesn’t. Have a look online at what similar things others are doing, and note why you are different.
If you can’t think of anything, then ask trusted friends, family, or an online community about what you’re good at.
You’ve got something so unique in you - a combination of knowledge and personality that no-one else has.
Let it out, baby!
