The thing about settling is…
When I was in my 20s I had a power blue VW ‘74 Superbeetle. It broke down ALL THE TIME.
It also didn’t have a floor. No kidding. In the back, if you pulled up the carpet, there was nothing but...road. Obviously we called it the Flintstonemobile.
The floor wasn’t the only problem. It didn’t have a radio. And it didn’t have heat, so in the winter the freezing wind from the floor hole would whip around everywhere.
To not freeze to death, I would have to step into a sleeping bag, put on mittens, scarf, and a hat. And sing to myself to pass the time.
At the time I thought it was hilarious. In all fairness, it was. But it never occurred to me that I should want something different. Or to think hang on, this isn’t really acceptable. I deserve more.
I didn’t have high standards because as long as I was getting by, things were good enough. Getting by was enough.
The lesson is that if we think that getting by is enough, we will always just get by.
